This week we would like to talk about sleep. Ah, that sometimes elusive little sweetie called sleep. Given the stress of all the upcoming holidays, parties, family, in-laws and kids vacations from school we thought this may be the time to bring some attention to this issue, especially if you already suffer from, what we like to call, N.E.S. (not enough sleep). There are so many reasons we don’t sleep well and we won’t list them all because we are pretty sure you know them if you are still reading. What we can tell you is a few ways we have found to beat the NES blues:
Eat well. Yes, it’s true, your organs respond throughout the night to what they are being asked to process. Eating a well-balanced diet rich in whole plant based foods will help you sleep better and longer, as will staying away from bedtime snacks, mainly sugars and grains, as these foods will raise blood sugar and inhibit your sleep patterns. So, if you need a snack before bed, lean towards proteins (a few nuts, a little yogurt or perhaps a leftover piece or chicken from dinner).
Take technology out of your bedroom. This may seem rash and unfathomable to you but it is more powerful than you may think. Studies show that “screen time” in the hour or so right before bed will disrupt your sleep and often times make it harder to get to sleep. We all know that staring at a screen makes us feel rested perhaps but then hours have gone by and our body has not had the true rest it needs to repair. We speak from experience here: keep your phone OUT OF YOUR ROOM! How many people raise their hand when we ask this, “Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and found yourself on Facebook or checking email?”. We are going to fathom a guess that there are many culprits. Set a schedule to wean yourself from nighttime media or just stop cold turkey. You’ll be glad you did when you don’t have ugly sleepless bags under your eyes.
Get black out shades in your room. If you don’t have these, get them, even if it’s only on two windows that are closest to your bed. It’s sometimes hard to notice how much even the slightest light of a car passing or the street lights flickering can wake you up. By the time you are awake the culprit isn’t even there and we wonder why we are up. You know the rest, the brain starts to race etc etc.
